Spring Cleaning Tips from Professionals - April 12, 2018

This spring, make your house a safer, healthier place to live. The tips below not only get your home back in shape for the spring and summer, but they help make your home a healthier place to live by minimizing germs and reducing allergens.

Professionally clean rugs, carpets and upholstery. If you really want to deep clean your carpets, rugs and upholstery and eliminate the dirt and germs that have accumulated over the winter months, call the experts at Chem-Dry. Chem-Dry uses a green-certified solution that's safe and non-toxic for kids and pets and a low-water, carbonating cleaning process that will give your surfaces and your home a deep-down, healthier clean. And be sure to ask about our premium Healthy Home package, which includes sanitizing your carpets and upholstery to reduce the unhealthy bacteria that may have collected. Since Chem-Dry uses 80% less water than typical steam cleaning, you'll love the convenience of our speedy dry times - just a couple of hour rather than a couple of days - and not having the mold and mildew growth that can come from the excessive water used by steam cleaners.

Thoroughly dust your home and clean or replace air conditioning and heating filters; clean all ducts and vents to decrease your exposure to pollen and other airborne allergens.

Remove mold and mildew in moist areas of the home. Mold is a fungus that can spark allergic reactions for many people and spring is a tough time of year for anyone with allergies of any kind. Use non-toxic cleaning products and make sure bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens are free of unhealthy mold.

Don't forget the tile, stone and grout. High traffic areas collect months of winter dirt and germs, and most weekly cleanings don't do the job when it comes to giving these surfaces a thorough, healthy cleaning. The grout between tiles and stone can be the toughest to get clean. While Chem-Dry is taking care of your carpets, area rugs and upholstery, ask them to also give your tile, stone and grout a professional cleaning to eliminate stains and bacteria from these extremely porous surfaces and start spring off on a healthier foot.

This spring, celebrate the start of nicer weather by making your home a cleaner, safer, healthier place to live and enjoy. And you can trust the professionals at Chem-Dry to make this more manageable and to be sure your family gets the healthier home makeover you want.

Give Your Rugs Some Love - February 8, 2018

Rugs can be a beautiful addition to any room, but because they often reside in high traffic areas maintaining them can often be a challenge. Many people don't know what area and oriental rugs act as air filters in your home, and they trap dirt, allergens, and bacteria. Much like carpets and upholstery, rugs should be cleaned often.

The good news is that maintaining a rug can be easier than you think. See the info-graphic below to learn exactly what the expert technicians at Big Sky Chem-Dry recommend. Or for more serious issues contact your local technician today for a professional rug cleaning.

New Year Resolutions for a Clean Home - January 18, 2018

It’s that time to flip the calendar and prepare for a new year. For many of us, the new year represents an opportunity to remedy past mistakes and start things anew with a clean slate.

Many take this new year as a chance to create better habits and an opportunity to set goals that promote change and growth. As you plan out your New Year’s resolutions this year, your home deserves a spot (or several) near the top of the list. Here are a few ideas we’ve thought up to keep in mind for your 2018 New Year’s resolutions:

Create a steady maintenance routine for your floors and walls.

Your walls should be cleaned about once a month, as necessary, depending on your climate and weather. If you tend to keep your windows open during the warmer months of the year, that number could be higher due to pollen. Children with sticky fingers warrant regular spot checks of your walls. Pay particular attention to corners, ceiling, and floors to remove cobwebs. PRO TIP: wrap adhesive tape around an old paint roller to help get rid of cobwebs.

Hardwood and tile floors should be swept weekly to prevent dirt accumulation. Likewise, carpets and rugs should be vacuumed every week. Don’t forget to get your carpets/rugs professionally cleaned every 3 to 6 months to get rid of the allergens and bacteria trapped inside them. PRO TIP: call Chem-Dry for all of your carpet/rug cleaning needs.

 Don’t disregard your living room.

One of the easiest ways to ensure your living room will become a mess is to slowly let clutter accumulate. It all starts with one pair of shoes or socks, but in a blink of an eye that one pair of shoes turns into a full on pile of junk. This year, make a point to remove anything that doesn’t belong ASAP.

Do not neglect dusting or cleaning your upholstered furniture. Dust, like shoes, accumulates quickly. Even if you think dust isn’t there, it is. Don’t forget to dust behind furniture and large electronics. Finally, it is recommended to have your upholstered cleaned once or twice a year. PRO TIP: call Chem-Dry for all of your upholstery cleaning needs.

Clean your kitchen at least twice a month.

This room is the culprit for some of the biggest messes in your home, but proper maintenance can easily prevent the messes from getting out of hand. Be sure to handle spills as soon as they happen. Food/liquid spills can result in permanent stains and bacterial growth.

Don’t forget the floors in your kitchen. They should be mopped every two weeks. If you have children or furry friends, you may need to do this more frequently. If you have stone tiles, maintain them with more regular mopping. However, you should schedule a professional cleaning every few months to keep those areas free of dirt and grime.

Deep clean your bathroom weekly.

Along with the kitchen, your bathroom can be one of the biggest areas in your home that is prone to messes. Every few days, check the sink for any build-up and clean any reside. PRO TIP: use a paper town or damp cloth to check/clean the residue.

Be sure to give your toilet a quick scrub once a week to prevent it from becoming a huge mess. Mop the floors every week, if possible. Finally, be sure to swap out your towels for new ones on a regular basis to stop bacterial growth in it’s tracks.

13 Spooky Good Cleaning Tips - October 6, 2017

As Halloween approaches, people all around the US are reflecting upon what creepy costumes and outrageous decorations they can use the holiday. However, have you given a thought to all of the stomach-churning messes in your home? We have! So, here are 13 spooky good cleaning tips to keep your home clean this Halloween season:

  1. Have marker stains on your wood? Use toothpaste to scrub off those pesky stains.
  2. De-stink your garbage disposal by running a few lemon rinds through it with cold water.
  3. Rub a cut lemon over your cutting board to remove stains and smells. For a little extra cleaning, sprinkle it with baking soda first.
  4. Use microfiber cloths instead of paper towels. They’re reusable and more inexpensive than paper towels.
  5. When vacuuming, start in the farthest corner and work toward the door. Be sure to use slow, repetitive front-to-back motions in an overlapping sequence.
  6. Make a lost and found for your home. Use a lidded storage container to stash stray buttons, lost game pieces, and other similar items.
  7. Use a lint roller to remove pet hair and cobwebs from your screen doors.
  8. Put a few splashes of Pine-Sol in the bottom of your toilet brush container. This will keep your bathroom smelling fresh, and it acts as a disinfecting cleaner for your brush.
  9. Fill a sandwich bag with white vinegar and place it on your shower head. Leave it on overnight. In the morning, your shower head will be free of dirt and grime.
  10. Does your drain move slower than tar? Mix ½ cup baking soda and ½ cup vinegar and pour it in the drain. Cover the drain with a wet cloth, let it sit for five minutes, and then flush with steaming-hot water.
  11. Use a 4-in plastic putty knife to scrape off scum on the tile in your showers and tubs. The trick is to wait until the surface is dry.
  12. To clean the top of your ceiling fan, wrap a dryer sheet around a painting roller and dust away.
  13. Call Big Sky Chem-Dry for all of your carpet and upholstery cleaning needs.

As summer comes to and end and the back-to-school season approaches, it can be hard to get back into the swing of all things school. Allergens In The Home - May 3, 2017

Did you know that allergens are the 5th leading chronic disease in the U.S.? Many Americans suffer from allergies during the Spring season, and one of the number one places allergens hide is in your home.

So what exactly are you living with? What lies beneath might surprise you. Did you know that eight out of 10 people in the U.S. are exposed to dust mites daily? That’s because 2,000 dust mites can live on one ounce of carpet dust. Six out of 10 are exposed to dog or cat dander and pet dander is more potent in causing allergic reactions than the animal’s fur or hair. That’s really rough for the 5-10% of Americans that are allergic to pet dander. And just because you are inside does not mean you are safe from pollen. It is carried inside on your clothes, hair, pets, open windows and doors.

Americans pay $1.3 billion for allergy-related doctor visits and over $11 billion for allergy medications annually. Wouldn’t it be great if you could do something to help control your allergies and keep some of your hard earned cash in your pocket? It’s not a hopeless battle. There are several things you can do to cut back on dirt and allergens in your home which can trigger an attack:

  • Dust to control mites. By dusting surfaces and washing bedding often, you can control the amount of dust mites in your home.
  • Vacuum often. Vacuuming once or twice a week will reduce the surface dust mites and animal dander in your home. Use a high quality 3 stage HEPA filter type vacuum.
  • Professionally clean your carpets and upholstery. Every 3-4 months, have Chem-Dry deep clean your carpets and upholstery to remove 98% of common allergens*.
  • Reduce pet dander. Wash house pets weekly to cut down on the amount of allergens in your home. In between baths, wipe down pets when they return from outdoors.
  • Shut out pollen. Keep windows and doors closed to keep pollen out. Use an air filter and change it regularly.
  • Limit dirt intrusion. Put out a durable entrance mat for people to wipe off their feet before entering your home. Then require everyone to take off their shoes so less dirt is tracked inside.

For further information on the amount of dirt, bacteria, and allergens that infiltrate our living spaces, check out the infographic below and make sure and share it with your friends.

Spring Cleaning Hot Spots - April 10, 2017

Did you know that Americans spendapproximately 90 percent of their time indoors? With that being said, spring cleaning becomes even more essential to create a safe and healthy living space. Spring cleaning can be quite a daunting task with the amount of cleaning there is to be done. The experts here at Big Sky Chem-Dry recommend that you don’t miss the following overlooked germ hotspots in your home. Cleaning these several areas help minimize germs and reduce allergens this season.

  • Tile. Porous grout, tile and stone can act like a magnet for dirt, dust and grimy particles such as mold spores. As undesirable particles gather on stone and tile surfaces, they can easily become a breeding ground for disease-causing bacteria in addition to masking the original color of the tile. For tile and grout cleaning in the bathroom and kitchen, it’s best to use a neutral pH tile cleaner in order to protect any previously applied sealers. Luckily for you, Big Sky Chem-Dry offers professional tile and stone cleaning, so you don’t have to do it yourself!
  • Upholstery. Upholstered furniture including sofas, love seats, recliners and dining room chairs provide a cozy haven for dust mites and dead skin. To reduce dust and dead skin build-up, thoroughly vacuum fabric-covered furniture and wash removable upholstery covers in hot water, letting them air dry.
  • Carpets, Rugs and Mats. Carpeting, rugs and mats accumulate dust and can become a feeding ground for microscopic dust mites. They pick up everything from pet urine to toenails and can hold approximately 200,000 bacteria per square inch. Bacteria and germs hiding in carpet fibers are not killed by vacuuming alone. So it’s absolutely vital to deep clean the area underneath rugs and mats as well. In fact, the EPA recommends homeowners have their carpets, rugs, and mats professionally cleaned two to three times a year.
  • Curtains and Blinds. Window curtains and blinds collect dust and dirt easily. Remove dust build-up by shutting blinds and dusting with a microfiber cloth. Next, close blinds in the opposite direction for a quick, thorough wipe-down using a non-toxic window cleaner and clean cloth.
  • Mattress. The average bed holds up to 10,000 dust mites, which can cause hay fever, asthma and allergies. Mattresses are a dust mite’s paradise as people sweat up to a half pint of moisture each night and shed up to nine pounds of skin each year while they sleep. Vacuum the mattress thoroughly and turn it over. Mattresses should be vacuumed at least once a month and turned over every six months to reduce dust mites.
  • Behind Stove and Refrigerator. Over time, crumbs, grease and other unwanted particles accumulate in these areas, providing a food source for insects and other pests. If possible, move the appliance out from the wall and unplug. Using a long-handled, slightly damp sponge, mop the back of the appliance to lift dust from the surface and then wipe the floor and walls with hot soapy water.

A Spooky Good Clean - October 8, 2016

We go throughout our lives knowing that we need to be regularly cleaning things such as our toilets and sinks, but what about all of the other things in our house that are regularly neglected? The following items need a spooky good cleaning in your home this Halloween season.

Your Mattress
After a long day at work, you can’t wait to crawl into bed and enjoy your favorite TV show. Then you remember what your local Chem-Dry told you about your mattress. Your mattress is filled with pounds of dead skin, gallons of sweat, and millions of dust mites. Sounds like a nightmare doesn’t it?

Your Carpet
If you aren’t getting your carpet regularly cleaned, you should. Your carpet is a magnet for hair, dust, pet fur, dead skin cells, allergens, and so much more. Not only that, if you aren’t getting your carpet professionally cleaned, you have the potential of mold collecting underneath that soft cushioning underneath your feet. Also, your carpet contains 4,000 times more bacteria than your toilet. Think about that disturbing fact next time you’re lying on your carpet.

Your Remote Control
We bet you didn’t know that the thing that you touch multiple times a day is one of the dirtiest items in your house. Your remote is sneezed on, spilled on, and covered with spills and messes daily. It give us the heebie-jeebies just thinking about all of the bacteria that accumulates on your TV remote daily.

Your Couches
We eat, we lounge, we watch TV, and so much more on our couches, but couches are known for their disgusting manner. There’s crumbs and change in the cracks, there’s bacteria on your couch (just as much as what is on your toilet seat), and disease causing bacteria survives on soft surfaces for 24 hours. Do yourself a favor, get your couches professionally cleaned before it’s too late!

Your Kitchen Sponge
Just like it was mentioned in some of our other items on this list, your kitchen sponge is 200,000 times dirtier than your toilet seat. We are washing our dishes with something that is dirtier than our toilet? Not to mention that some organisms from our food get lodged into the nooks and crannies of our, so called, cleaning device. Now that is eerie.
Don’t let the inside of your home be as spooky as the decorations outside it.

Happy Halloween from Big Sky Chem-Dry!

Back to School - August 3, 2016

It’s time to get your carpets cleaned out simply because it’s time to go back to school. What does school have to do with carpets you ask? Well the reply could astonish you. The carpets in your residence respond as big air filters that capture dust and bacteria which were at one time flying in the air close to you. In fact, independent studies show that the air within your home can be 10 times more contaminated with allergens and bacteria than the air just outside your doors. When you clean your carpets you clean a very big filter that can now work once more capturing those tiny bugs you don’t need floating around this time of year.

Our carpet cleaning system uses natural green credentialed products and solutions that when used with our sanitizers can eliminate 89% of airborne bacteria and 98% of allergens. Considering that back to school time usually means kids brining home bugs they obtained from peers, doesn’t it make perfect sense to clean the major air filters in your home, your carpets?

We realize you would like a healthy home and can help you attain that by using our hot carbonating extraction procedure to clean your carpets, upholstery and more. This process uses the power of carbonation to lift dirt, allergens, dust mites, bacteria, and a lot more from the carpet fibers and we use a smaller amount water than our competitors leaving your carpets cleaner, dryer and healthier.

Supply your children, and family, the most effective chance to stay secure this back to school season with Big Sky Chem-Dry.

Moving Out? - June 2, 2016

Moving out is generally one troublesome job. Between packing, cleaning and boxing up your property, moving could possibly trigger massive stress in your life. We decided to create this blog to help take a bit of your moving burdons off of your shoulders.

packing up your possessions can either be a adventure down memory lane or a adventure down stressful street. We are wishing that the following tips will lead the way for memory lane. Initially, have a yard sale to get rid of all of your unused or unwanted items. Yes, that includes the shirt in the back of your closet that you haven't put on in two years. The less you need to pack, the better! Second, color coordinate your boxes with duct tape. That way you can conveniently notice what boxes go to what room. Third, shop for and sell moving resources on Craigslist or your local classifieds. Saving cash is always a good thing! Lastly, pack smaller sized items in larger sized ones to preserve space!

Once you've boxed up your things, the real fun begins - cleaning. What your landlords want you to know is that they like you to leave your rental spotless. That includes the basebords, in and out of the refridgerator, behind the refridgerator, the inside and outside of the windows need to be washed, and much much more. However, many people have no idea that landlords expect all of the carpets in your rental to be professionally washed. Keep in mind to schedule an appointment with a experienced carpet cleaner, like us, four weeks before your move-out date!

Below is a free printable checklist to help sort out the mayhem that is moving out!

Six Spring Cleaning Tips - April 5, 2016

Spring is the time of year that will bring April showers and May flowers! In conjunction with the change in temperature, this season leads to a whole monster of it's own - Spring cleaning. At Chem-Dry we know that Spring cleaning can be a troublesome project, but we are here to provide you with a few pieces of advice that will make your cleaning considerably less difficult!

1. Know your allergy triggers
Everyone has specific microscropic particles that lead to our allergy symptoms. Some of the most popular triggers are pet dander, tree pollen, mold spores, and dust mites. Once you figure out what your allergy triggers are, redirect your Spring cleaning towards getting rid of those irritating particles!

2. Get rid of standing water sources
Not only are standing water sources a breeding ground for mosquitos, but it is also a reproduction ground for molds - among the list of most typical allergy triggers! Be sure to pour out any standing water you have in and around your household during your Spring cleaning cleanse.

3. Don't just move dust around - trap it
If you're utilizing a feather duster to do the dusting around your home, you might want to change your method of dusting. Feather dusters don't actually get rid of the unwanted dust on the surfaces in your house, they just move the dust around. Instead of using that method of dusting, try using a moist washcloth or papertowel. They will actually trap the undesired dust, instead of just moving it around.

4. Keep your house cool and dry
Keeping your home at a reduced temperature and humidity will decrease the chances of dust mites and mold spores making an appearance in your property this Spring.

5. Wash or replace moldy shower curtains
Make it a point this season to swap that aged moldy shower curtain that's been hanging up for some time! Our shower curtains are a breeding ground for mold. Not to mention that the mold can take a trip to other parts of our home in the hotter months of the year!

6. Remove trapped allergens
As a part of your Spring regimen, you should be getting your carpet, upholstery, and rugs skillfully cleaned. They act as air filters in your home, so if allergens are trapped in your carpet or upholstery you're at risk to breathing them in!

Recall these six tips and tricks from your neighborhood Chem-Dry while your doing your Spring cleaning this year, and every year after!
